Tesla is expanding its Supercharger network by at least three times by the end of this year to cover most major areas of U.S. and Southern Canada, CEO Elon Musk said during the All Things Digital D11 conference, Wednesday.

Tesla and SpaceX CEO, Elon Musk, announced that the Tesla Supercharger network will be expanded by the end of 2013 making it convenient to drive the Tesla electric car from Los Angeles to New York without hassles.

The All Things D D11 conference has seen some latest updates by tech giants. The  Apple CEO Tim Cook talked about the next iOS and there was an announcement about Google's Moto X Smartphone to be released this fall and now Tesla is expanding its supercharger network in the US and Southern Canada.

"We had to make something quick to charge," Musk said during the conference, "and we are going to have dramatic acceleration of the Supercharger network, and will triple the coverage area. By the end of this year will cover most of the major areas of the U.S. and southern Canada, so you could drive from Los Angeles to New York with the Supercharger stations."

Tesla currently has only nine active Supercharger stations, seven of which are in California including Gilroy, Harris Ranch, Tejon Ranch, Barstow, Folsom and Los Angeles. Tesla had earlier announced that it would expand to 100 stations by 2015 and this may just be a start to that future goal.

Tesla made the headlines recently for paying off its $465 million loan from the Department of Energy, nine years ahead of its due-date. Musk had announced that his company would deliver "a great, affordable electric car" within the next three to four years.

Despite Musk's focus towards Tesla expansion, his vision to travel to Mars remains persistent.

"Either we spread earth to other planets, or we risk going extinct," Musk said. "An extinction event is inevitable, and we're increasingly doing ourselves in. We want to have a future where humanity is exploring the stars, and where what you see in the movies comes true."
