What appears to be a shadowy figure photographed on the moon's surface last month has grabbed the attention and wild imaginations of the curious, according to The Huffington Post.

Wowforreeel, a Youtube user, began investigating the "figure" in July after reviewing a collection of publicly availabale NASA images called Google Moon, according to KGW.

The so-called "figure" may be nothing more than a geological formation casting a shadow on the moon's surface. But the suggestion that the object is an alien out for a stroll or an ancient statue similar to the "The Colossus of Rhodes" has taken root on the Internet.

"Of course, the shadow might be explained in a number of ways, particularly as a trick of light or a camera lens glitch," The Examiner caustions its readers, adding. "But, if those explanations are ruled out, it still leaves the question of what this object is, since it appears to be rising a great distance from the surface of the Moon."

"The gigantic shape actually looks like the leading edge of an immense, triangular spaceship, similar to, so far, super secret stealth technology, but is much larger than any airplane ever built on Earth," comments Tech and Gadget News.

Wowforreeel and The Daily Mail insist the shadow looks like an alien walking alongside its shadow. Although Wowforreeel suggested something could have been drawn on the picture, he changed his mind, writing:  "After going to Google Moon, whatever it is... uh, is there."

More and more people, it seems, see it the same way.

This isn't the first time Internet users have decided rocks, craters, shadows or lights are aliens. NASA's Curiosity rover snapped pictures on Mars that look like aliens but most likely aren't, according to the Huffington Post. And just last week, the Rosetta spacecraft took a picture of what appears to be a "face" on a comet. Other false space sightings include a Mars rocks that looked like rat and a flash of light also captured by NASA's Curiosity rover, Space.com reported.
