Samsung secured 36.1 percent of the U.S. smartphone shipments during the second quarter this year, beating Apple with a 6 percent lead.

The renowned smartphone giant, Samsung, did not have a successful second quarter this year as it lost dominance to local smartphone vendors in significant markets of China and India. But the Korean tech giant sustained its top rank in the U.S., where it competes vigorously with Cupertino-based tech giant Apple. According to the latest market analysis by Counterpoint Research, Samsung smartphone shipments in the U.S. accounted for 36.1 percent of the total, comfortably placing the Korean smartphone leader at the top position.

The impressive sales of Samsung Galaxy S5, the current flagship smartphone, contributed to the success of Samsung in the U.S. Counterpoint Research found that the Galaxy S5's sales volume was 50 percent higher than that of Galaxy S4 last year. The success of Samsung in the U.S. during Q2 2014 between May and July is like a shining star in a dark sky. The company has been fighting dwindling sales of its smartphones in other markets.

The U.S. market has been favorable for Samsung and Apple, which usually secure the top two positions. The Cupertino tech giant accounted for 29.7 percent share in the U.S. smartphone shipments throughout the second quarter. But the company is expected to make huge returns with its upcoming smartphones, the two iPhone 6 models with large screens. Analysts predict the sales of iPhone 6 will be impressive considering Apple's new screen sizes that have been widely reported and eagerly awaited.

Carrier-wise, Samsung enjoyed favorable sales from Verizon and Sprint and Apple was the favorite among AT&T subscribers, CNET reported. Counterpoint also found that smartphones represented 90 percent of the total mobile phone shipments, which also included feature phones.
