Even stars have bad hair experiences.

"NCIS: Naval Criminal Investigative Service" actress Pauley Perrette was hospitalized over the weekend after suffering a severe allergic reaction to hair dye, according to CBS News.

Perrette, who plays forensic scientist Abby Sciuto on the hit CBS show, is a natural blonde, but has reportedly been dyeing her hair black for years, as it has become a signature part of her "NCIS" character's look.

However, the 45-year-old actress had a horrifying hair dye experience that landed her in the emergency room. She shared a picture of herself on Twitter wearing a hospital gown with a swollen face, and used the social media site to warn fans about the dangers of hair dye.

In a following tweet, the actress shared that she has been having allergic reactions for a year and the symptoms reportedly get worse during each experience.

"Wasn't sure if I should tweet about this, but it's important," Perrette wrote in her Twitter post. "Did my head look a bit puffy on the red carpet last night? Turns out I was having a dangerous allergic reaction to hair dye. Been battling this for a year now, but it gets worse every time."

She added: "It's an acquired allergy for people that dye their hair for years. (Y'all know I'm blonde) Was in ER. Just got home from hospital. Awful. My head swelled up huge like a melon. If you or someone you know dyes their hair, especially black, please Google 'hair dye allergy.' Know the symptoms. It can be fatal. People have died. For real."

Perrette told CBS Los Angeles that she experienced warning signs six months ago when a rash developed on her neck, however she admitted to ignoring the symptoms. The actress said she is considering natural hair dye or possibly wearing a wig for the show.

"The most important thing to me is that anyone out there that dyes their hair, particularly black, you need to be aware of the symptoms," she told CBS Los Angeles.
