Former major league baseball player Jose Canseco Jr. is now embroiled in a sexual assault investigation, and weirdly enough, he made the news public himself.

In a tweet at around 1:15 p.m. on Wednesday, he said the Las Vegas police had just come to his house, and that he had been charged with rape in Las Vegas.

The tweets grew increasingly more aggressive and bizarre, and created a furor on the social network. Canseco went as far as to give out what he claims to be his accuser's name, contact details and photograph, daring her to take a polygraph. Most of those tweets have now been deleted, though Canseco denies doing that.

One recent tweet said: "For the record I do not delete tweets. I have nothing to hide. The truth always comes out."

The Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department reportedly issued the following statement: "The Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department is currently investigating a Sexual Assault case. Jose Canseco [sic] has been named as the suspect in this investigation. At this time no charges have been filed and our investigation remains ongoing. Per department policy neither victim information or investigation details are available for release."

The 48-year-old Canseco was an outfielder and designated hitter for numerous teams. In 2005, he made the headlines by admitting his steroid use in a book titled "Juiced: Wild Times, Rampant 'Roids, Smash Hits & How Baseball Got Big", which was full of insider revelations about drug use in the game.

Since 2006, he has embarked on a career in the Independent League, and is set to play for the Fort Worth Cats in the team's season opener game at Lagrave Field in Texas on Thursday.

Not to be thwarted by the outcry on Twitter, an unabashed Canseco tweeted: "At lagrave field getting swarmed by the media already. Lol."
