Motorola is not out of its game, but is just taking a step back to pounce at the right chance it gets, at least that's what the latest reports suggest.  According to several media reports, a Moto X successor with improved specs and design might just be in the making.

The rumors have been building around a Moto X+1 for days now. The latest revelation on the benchmark site, GFX Bench gives a detail look at the unannounced smartphone's technical specifications. The smartphone carries a XT912A model number, same as the current Moto X, suggesting the leaked specifications are for the successor of Motorola's flagship.

According to the site, the so-called Moto X+1 will feature a 5.2-inch Full HD display with 1920 x 1080 pixel resolution and a quad-core Snapdragon 800 processor. The details show the RAM is 1.7GB, which likely points to 2GB and 24GB internal storage. The camera is an upgrade from Moto X's 10MP to 12-megapixel rear-facing camera with auto-focus, HDR, touch focus and face detection on the X+1. The handset will also feature a 2-megapixel shooter in the front with HD video capabilities, GFX Bench adds. The promise to deliver latest updates seem to continue on the next Motorola smartphone, as the report shows the unreleased Android 4.4.3 KitKat to be on board with Moto X+1.

With these specifications aboard, Motorola doesn't seem to be targeting the high-end smartphone market currently occupied by Samsung Galaxy S5, iPhone 5S and others. Like its predecessor, Moto X+1 will take on the mid-range smartphone market.

While the specs are more convincing, the model number chosen for the handset is quite confusing. According to The Droid Guy, the XT912A could either refer to the widely rumored Moto X+1 or a new addition to Motorola's Droid family. The tech blog found XT912 model number associated with Verizon's 2011 Droid Razr and the addition of the letter "A" in the model could mean the next Droid Razr on Verizon's network is in the works.

At this stage, drawing conclusions is extremely difficult and Motorola is keeping mum on the topic. The company is continuing to focus on offering discounts on the current Moto X. The company has slashed the price for the handset to $299.99 for a 24-hour sale on May 1.
