Fan TV announced on Tuesday that an agreement with Time Warner Cable Inc. will grant subscribers the ability to access content on Fan TV's set-top box.

The TV box was announced in May of last year as a tool to access cable and streaming video content, but it didn't have an agreement with any cable company at the time, according to The Verge.

Time Warner said the device is set to ship at the end of the second quarter of 2014. The TV box can be pre-ordered now at fan.tv for $99, while the regular price will be $149. Customers can also upgrade without changing their current contract and do not have to pay any fees past the cost of the box.

"The Fan TV experience is a leap forward for the cable industry," said Mike Angus, senior vice president at Time Warner.

Fan TV will only be able to access content that is available on Time Warner's mobile app. The selection includes live TV, with up to 300 channels, and video on-demand content, with up to 5,000 titles. A DVR service is not available yet, which means Fan TV will not be able to record shows or access recordings on the customer's DVR, CNET reported.

Despite the lack of a DVR service, the TV box is able to pause live TV, which is a feature not included in Time Warner's mobile apps.

Fan TV's user interface is controlled by a remote that has no buttons and is based on gestures. The TV box can also search for content across many different services, making it easier for customers to find where movies and TV shows are available, CNET reported.

Fan TV is the latest addition to the set-top box market, and now faces competitors such as Amazon's Fire TV, Roku, Apple TV and Chromecast, The Verge reported.

Gilles BianRosa, CEO of Fan TV, said he is unsure of how long the partnership will last if Time Warner goes through with its planned merger with Comcast.

"You'll have to ask Comcast," BianRosa said.

Time Warner serves currently 30 million customers in the U.S.
