A teenager in New York who was shot in the eye by a stray bullet was released from the hospital on Tuesday.

According to NBCNews.com, Gama Droiville, 13, was hit while waiting at a bus stop with his aunt last Monday. He was hit a total of two times in the head as a gunman chased after another man in Flatbush, who was also shot in the leg.

Though his aunt tried to bring him to safety inside of a local pizzeria, she realized he had already been shot.

As police officers escorted him out of Kings County Hospital, he smiled and thanked everyone for their support. He also said he was "in the healing process" and not sure if he would ever regain eyesight in his right eye, which he now covers with an eye patch.

"I would like to say thank you to all the journalists and my choir members and my church that are still keeping me in prayer," Droiville said.

Dr. Douglas Lazzaro, chief of ophthalmology at the hospital, told NBC News that Droiville was as "inspiration for the staff here."

"We were lucky to be able to serve this young man," he said.

In order to remove the bullet from his eye, Droiville underwent more than four hours of surgery.

Police said Kareem Potomont, 19, was charged in the incident with two counts of attempted murder, assault, and criminal possession of a weapon on Friday, prompting Droiville to give "a special thank you to the NYPD for catching this guy."
