A woman in New Jersey was charged with attempted murder after she drove her van into the Delaware River with her teenage children inside the vehicle, CNN reported.

On Tuesday, 49-year-old Joann Smith drove off a boat ramp into the river in what investigators believe was an attempt to kill her kids. She has since been charged with three counts of attempted murder and three counts of endangering the welfare of children.

Witness Darnell Taylor was driving on West Front Street in Florence and saw the incident occur. He ran over to help Smith and her children, ages 15, 14, and 13, out of the van, according to the Burlington County Prosecutor's Office.

"I got out of the car and heard people screaming," Taylor told NBC Philadelphia. "I took off my jacket, jumped in and swam out there."

Taylor swam toward the family as his wife called 911.

"I couldn't get the window open because the window in the van was not a pop out window," Taylor said. "So I kept telling the young lady to kick the window out and she kicked it out."

Aside from a cut one of the teens suffered, no other injuries or deaths were reported.

According to Taylor, all Smith said during the heroic rescue was "Thank you."

Smith was transported to a mental health facility for evaluation. Additionally, her bail was set at $600,000, Florence Township Police Capt. Brian Boldizar told CNN. She will likely appear in Superior Court in Mount Holly on Thursday afternoon.

"He was a godsend," Bob Lane, a Florence Township resident, told NBC. "He saved them. That water is not warm and he jumped in."
