A 12-year-old girl became the youngest mother in Britain when she gave birth to a 7-pound baby girl last weekend.

The girl became pregnant when she formed a relationship with a 13-year-old boy while still in elementary school, The Sun reported, according to Metro. Together, the couple are now Britain's youngest parents.

A man who identified himself as the 12-year-old's father said on a local radio show he was proud of his daughter.

"Shame doesn't come into it. We're so proud of her," the father, who did not reveal his identity, told the Nick Ferrari show, according to The Independent. "We're so proud of her.

"She's only my little girl, whether she's done that or not. There are lots of routes kids this age can take. Lots of kids are on drugs. She brought something beautiful into the world and we're all proud of her."

The 12-year-old mother is five months younger than another girl, Tressa Middleton, who used to be Britain's youngest mother when she had a child in 2006.

The girl's mother, who is reportedly 27, is also Britain's youngest grandmother, The Independent reported.

The parents apparently did not know their daughter was expecting. They only found out eight months into her pregnancy, the father told the radio station.

"I cried, as any father would do, breaking down with emotion," the father said, according to The Independent. "The baby is going to come into the world no matter what. You can just be supportive about it."

The couple, who have been in a relationship for more than a year, want to raise their daughter together, according to Metro.

"They're very into each other, totally in love. She is obsessed with him. She sees this as true love," a source close to the family told The Sun.

The new mother is expected to return to school in September.
