A Detroit teen who allegedly mauled the driver of a truck that accidentally struck a 10-year-old boy has been charged with ethnic intimidation.

Officials from the Wayne County Prosecutor's Office told the Detroit Free Press that the unidentified 16-year-old was also charged with assault with intent to do great bodily harm. He will be tried as a juvenile, and is scheduled to make an appearance in court on Saturday.

Two men and one other teen have been arrested in connection with the April 2nd event that left 54-year-old motorist Steve Utash hospitalized and in critical condition.

24-year-old James Davis, 30-year-old Wonzey Saffold and Bruce Wimbush, 17, were also arrested and charged with assault with intent to murder and do bodily harm, after they reportedly severely beat Utash with a group of other witnesses.

Steve Utash hit 10-year-old David Harris last Wednesday with his vehicle after the boy stepped off a curb in front of a Clark gas station on the city's east side.

According to Detroit Police Sgt. Michael Woody, it appeared the driver hit the child at about 4:10 p.m., then pulled over and exited his car to check on the victim. Residents of the neighborhood and passerby who watched the crash then reportedly assaulted Utash.

The child survived with no broken bones.

Police said the crowd of about 10 to 12 bystanders, Wimbush, Saffold and Davis among them, mauled Utash, causing him multiple serious injuries. The Detroit motorist is currently hospitalized and in a medically-induced coma, law enforcement officials and family members told the Free Press.

Police have reportedly arrested a fifth person believed to be linked to the event.

"The facts of this case are unbelievably tragic," Woody wrote in a statement last week.

Utash's daughter Felicia said her family was devastated by the attack.

"What happened to my dad is a shame," Felicia wrote on Facebook. "He was doing the right thing like he always does. He's a tree trimmer for a living and makes sure all the squirrels are out of a tree before he cuts it down. He's an amazing dad and person."
