A recent poll conducted by the Washington Post/ABC shows support for gay marriage in the United States is at it's highest rate ever, POLITICO reported.

New numbers show six in 10 Americans, or 59 percent, support same-sex marriage while 34 percent oppose it -- a major switch from just a decade ago, when the numbers were essentially reversed.

Seven in 10 Americans also expressed disapproval at denying gay people service based on religious beliefs, following the national debate over S.B. 1062 in Arizona and similar bills in Kansas and Missouri.

Democrats were most likely to support gay marriage at 70 percent, followed by independents at 61 percent and Republicans at 40 percent. Additionally, age was a major factor in support, with three-quarters of Americans under 30 supporting it and less than half of seniors supporting it.

Religious affiliation was also a key component in the research, showing six in 10 evangelical Protestants opposing gay marriage, though the same amount of Catholics support it. In addition, eight in 10 Americans not affiliated with religion support gay marriage.

The poll found that 50 percent of Americans believe the U.S. Constitution gives gay and lesbian couples the right to marry while 41 percent does not believe it does.

The survey was conducted from Feb. 27 to March 2 and included 1,002 participants. The margin of error is plus or minus 3.5 percentage points.
