Australia: 30,000 Residents Ordered to Evacuate Amid 'Catastrophic' Bushfire Threat

As Australia grapples with some of the worst fire conditions in recent memory, more than 30,000 residents have been urged to evacuate their homes in Victoria amid fears of catastrophic bushfires.

Jason Heffernan, chief officer at Victoria's Country Fire Authority, emphasized the severity of the situation

"Extreme fire dangers are coming to fruition, and in fact, we're currently seeing catastrophic conditions in Casterdon, Hamilton and Kanagulk in the Wimmera weather district," he said.

The urgency to evacuate stems from the potential spread of a massive bushfire near the city of Ballarat, which has been burning since last Thursday, consuming swathes of land and destroying homes.

Heffernan emphasized the gravity of the circumstances, urging communities to be prepared to take immediate action at short notice.

The fire's impact has been significant, with six homes already destroyed, livestock killed, and vast areas scorched.

Dry lightning from forecast thunderstorms also poses additional risks. Heffernan emphasized the danger posed by dry lightning, warning of its potential to spark new fires and exacerbate existing ones.

In response to the escalating threat, authorities have issued total fire bans across several cities, including Melbourne, as temperatures soar to unprecedented levels.

Luke Hegarty, spokesperson for the Victorian State Control Centre, highlighted the heightened vigilance among emergency responders as conditions worsen.

According to Hegarthy's statement to the BBC, authorities remained vigilant late Wednesday afternoon as cloud cover dispersed, temperatures surged, and winds intensified.

Meanwhile, residents in affected areas are urged not to wait until the bushfire encroaches closer before moving to safer locations.
