A Japanese man in his 50s rammed the barricades near the Israeli embassy in Tokyo, injuring a police officer in the process.

According to Reuters, the suspect, a member of a local right-wing group, sped through the barriers near the embassy, which has been the site of several pro-Palestinian demonstrations in the Japanese capital in recent weeks.

A police officer in his 20s was injured during the incident.

In response, Israeli Ambassador to Japan Gilad Cohen said on a social media post that he was "shocked" by the events and said local police are investigating the matter.

"I would like to express gratitude to the Japanese government and Tokyo Police for their commitment to ensuring our security," he added. "Wishing a speedy recovery to the injured police officer."

Israel-Hamas War Reverberating Across Asia

Since October 7, police have stepped up security in the area, including the erection of the barricades.

There were also similar incidents of pro-Palestinian action across Asia.

A month ago, a staffer at the Israeli embassy in Beijing was assaulted in a knife attack and was eventually taken to hospital for treatment.

Meanwhile, pro-Palestine protesters in the Philippines, mostly from progressive and left-wing youth groups, gathered outside the US embassy in Manila to protest against American support for Israel earlier this week.
