Israel said it recaptured Gaza border areas from Hamas militants as the war's death toll passed 3,000 on October 10, the fourth day of fierce fighting since the Islamists launched a surprise attack.

The US State Department announced on Wednesday (October 11) that the death toll on Hamas's attack on Israel has been updated to at least 22, up from yesterday's tally of 14.

"At this time, we can confirm the deaths of at least 22 US citizens," the State Department said in a statement. "We extend our deepest condolences to the victims and to the families of all those affected."

Yesterday (Tuesday, October 10), US President Joe Biden addressed the deaths of Americans in Israel as an "act of sheer evil" that the world must condemn.

As of Wednesday, the total death toll of the war was over 2,000 deaths, both military and civilian.

The White House is scheduled to brief the press about the update this afternoon.

Meanwhile, US Secretary of State Antony Blinken is reportedly en route to Israel on Wednesday.
