An Indonesian woman wearing a facemark rides a glass walled elevator in the central business district September 14, 2020 in Jakarta, Indonesia. Jakarta re-entered strict social distancing measures once again after governor Anies Baswedan ordered offices.

Authorities said that the latest deadly elevator accident in Indonesia happened because a cable snapped.

Five hotel workers-three women and two men-were riding the lift when the cable failure happened. Officials said that they plunged 100 meters down a steep ravine at the hillside resort.

The elevator they were using was a glass lift, which is one of the attractions of the resort. It is very popular with visitors, especially Instagram influencers who want to create their content.

Metro UK reported that the five hotel workers have been identified as:

  • Kadek Hardiyanti (24 years old)
  • Ni Luh Superningsih (20 years old)
  • Wayan Aries Setiawan (23 years old)
  • Sang Putu Bayu Adi Krisna (19 years old)
  • Kadek Yanti Pradewi (19 years old)

The families of the victims said that they will no longer pursue legal action against the resort. They shared their decision after the Balinese resort paid them $20,000.

Hardiyanti's uncle, Nyoman Suarila, explained that even if they filed a lawsuit, their children would not return.

"But we believe in karma. If the company is wrong, then it will get it. That's our principle," added the victim's family member.

A resident enters an elevator at Henri Dunant retirement home as the country experiences a major heat wave, in Bordeaux, south-western France, on August 21, 2023.

According to The Guardian, the Balinese police are still investigating the elevator incident.

Police Chief Made Uder explained that the steel wing rope wasn't strong enough to pull the weight upwards.

He added that the brake/safety wedge wasn't functioning properly when the lift slid downwards at high speed. Aside from this, the resort's elevator is believed to have no emergency brake at all.

Bali's Deputy Governor Cok Ace said that he had seen a permit declaring that the elevator is safe was acquired by the resort.

However, this permit was a part of the routine inspections that were conducted in November 2022.

This means that there's a chance that the Balinese resort made some adjustments in the elevator. This is what Ketut Widiada, Gianyar regency's police chief, believes.

The official explained that they are investigating if there was a reduction in the number of sling ropes supporting the glass life that had caused the tragedy.

While the investigation is being conducted, the resort's guests have been moved to alternative accommodation.
