Arizona to Florida continue to be scorched by the blazing heat, and powerful storms are forecast for the Midwest and Northeast.
US government offices in the Washington DC area closed early on Monday due to looming severe weather threats, setting the stage for a turbulent day across the eastern United States.
Forecasters issued warnings for possible tornadoes, damaging winds, and large hailstones, as fast-moving thunderstorms swept through the region, according to Reuters.
Severe Storms Prompt Early Closure of US Government Offices
The impact of these powerful storms was swift and widespread, with trees uprooted and power knocked out for hundreds of thousands of homes and businesses in Maryland, Virginia, and beyond. As many as 800,000 customers were left without power in states spanning the southern and mid-Atlantic regions.
Tragically, the storms claimed lives as well. In Anderson, South Carolina, a 15-year-old boy lost his life when a falling tree struck him as he exited a car at his grandparents' house. In Florence, Alabama, a 28-year-old man was fatally struck by lightning, a grim reminder of the dangers posed by such extreme weather events.
The National Weather Service (NWS) sounded the alarm, issuing tornado watches and warnings across a sprawling area that encompassed 10 states from Tennessee to New York.
