Bronny James, son of NBA star LeBron James, was rushed to the hospital Monday (July 24) after suffering a cardiac arrest while undergoing a basketball workout for the USC Trojans.

According to TMZ Sports, a representative of the James family told reporters medical staff was able to treat the younger James after suffering a cardiac arrest. He was in critical condition but his health stabilized soon after, the spokesperson added.

The James family also asked the public to respect their privacy at the moment as they deal with Bronny's hospitalization.

What Happened to Bronny James?

Sources with direct knowledge of the incident told TMZ Sports a 911 call was made Monday morning after the younger James lay unconscious while undergoing basketball training at USC's Galen Center. Other sources even told reporters the situation was Code 3, meaning the seriousness of James's medical emergency.

Bronny James was a McDonald's All-American player during his high school senior season and showed the potential to follow in his father's footsteps and end up in the NBA. He averaged 14 points, 5 rebounds and 3 assists at Sierra Canyon High School during his senior season.

He was a four-star recruit and is currently committed to studying and playing with the Trojans in his college stint.

What is a Cardiac Arrest?

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), a cardiac arrest occurs when the heart suddenly and unexpectedly stops beating, which also stops the flow of blood to the rest of the body. A person could also lose consciousness or stop breathing.

There are several major causes of cardiac arrest, which include an abnormal enlargement of the heart muscle, a restriction to the flow of blood, or an arrhythmia, which is when the heart beats too slowly, too fast, or in an irregular way.

People who experienced cardiac arrest should be treated immediately through cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) and shocks to the heart with a device called an automated external defibrillator (AED). Survival is possible with fast, appropriate medical care.

Those who survive a cardiac arrest may experience brain and internal organ injury or psychological distress like anxiety, depression, and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD).
