How to Reduce Stress on Your Daily Commute

Many people cite their daily commute as a big contributor to their stress. That needn't be the case, though. While sitting in traffic for an hour or pushing yourself through crowds for a train is undeniably frustrating, there are ways to make your daily commute a lot more pleasant. Read on to learn how.

Invest in a Good Vehicle

If you drive to work, your car needs to be a smooth-running vehicle that doesn't break down without warning. Otherwise, you will only add to your stress. It's incredible just how much of a difference driving a car you really love makes! If you're ready for some new wheels, there are Los Angeles used cars to suit your price range and car preference.

Work Out the Smoothest Route

For a less stressful commute, you want to take the smoothest route, and that isn't always the fastest. You can look on Google Maps for help with this - search for a route with the least amount of traffic while getting you there in good time. If you find a way around the highway that is usually packed with traffic, consider taking that - especially if the views are prettier.

Create a Music Playlist

Music changes people's moods. Most people listen to something on their daily commute, whether that's the radio station they're used to or a Spotify playlist made by someone else. If you haven't already, create a music playlist that is uplifting and appeals to your music taste. It will help you start the day more positively.

Set Off Earlier

Running for a bus or willing the traffic to disappear to get to work on time will not help your stress levels. If you want a smoother commute, make sure to set off earlier than you need to. There's something pleasant about showing up to work early, anyway. You needn't get started on your actual work tasks; instead, you can slowly get yourself a morning coffee and set up for the day.

Consider Carpooling

Carpooling is an excellent option for car commuters, as being around someone else can make the drive a lot more fun. Not to mention it's better for the planet! If you have a workmate who lives in your general area, consider teaming up to get to work together.

Switch Off Your Devices

At work, you need to be switched on. On the commute to work, though, you only need to think about driving the car or taking the bus/train/subway. Make that time even more peaceful by switching off your devices completely, or at least switching them to 'do not disturb'. You'll come to appreciate those moments where you don't have to worry about an email or early morning phone call.

Read or Listen to a Book

Reading is a great habit. Books make you smarter, reduce stress, and take you to another world, whether you're in a car or train. A great way to lower your stress levels while fitting reading into your daily routine is to read or listen to a book on your commute. If you drive, you can download Audible and get through tons of amazing literature while driving to work. The next time you get stuck in traffic, you might not be so frustrated, especially if you are on an exciting chapter!

For many, the commute takes up a significant chunk of the day, so it's crucial to make that time as stress-free as possible.
