A new concept phone design, created by designer Metti Farhang, called the Sony Xperia Edge has now surfaced online. The concept design showcases what a Sony smartphone would look like if it had a triple bezel-less display.

Ever since Xiaomi launched their proof-of-concept smartphone, the Xiaomi Mi Mix, other smartphone manufacturers quickly came out with their own take on the bezel-less smartphone design. Xiaomi's concept device, which was eventually made commercially available in China, was the first of its kind to feature a screen to body ratio that surpassed 90 percent.

According to Gizmochina, the concept design has actually not been officially sanctioned by Sony themselves, but the renders that were released for the concept phone certainly looks to be an interesting showcase of a possible Sony product. The overall screen layout is quite similar to the concept that was recently unveiled by Sharp, called the Sharp Concept R, wherein all three sides of the phone's display are curved towards the rear.

Aside from Sharp, the Chinese handset manufacturer Meizu had also unveiled their own concept smartphone which featured a bezel-less display. However, unlike both companies, Huawei is taking the concept more seriously within their own line-up as they are actually now planning to launch a new bezel-less smartphone, called the Huawei Honor Magic, that will reportedly be making its debut this week, on Dec. 16, in China.

As for the Sony Xperia Edge concept, there still remains to be a small bezel on the bottom part of the device that looks to house the phone's front facing camera. Based on the current design trends, the bottom bezel may soon also disappear in future smartphones as companies continue to strive for more screen real estate. Samsung and Apple have yet to reveal any plans for adapting the bezel-less design, but seeing as that there have been mostly positive reviews for Xiaomi's product, consumers may soon be seeing a bezel-less Apple iPhone and Samsung Galaxy S smartphones in the coming years.
