Several "Star Wars: Episode 8" spoilers have so far hinted at the origin of Luke Skywalker's lightsaber and how it ends up being with Rey. Now a new theory suggests that the powerful weapon may have been retrieved by Maz Kanata, who plays a crucial role in the upcoming sequel.

During his fight with Darth Vader on Bespin, Luke Skywalker ends up losing his hand and his blue lightsaber. However, the same lightsaber was again seen in "Star Wars: Episode 8," locked safely inside a treasure chest at Maz Kanata's castle.

The lightsaber, somehow, attracts Rey towards itself and she ends up opening the box to retrieve the blue lightsaber. She uses the same weapon to fight with Kylo Ren, who looks a bit uncomfortable seeing the lightsaber with her.

According to a theory posted by Movie Pilot, Kylo Ren may be possessing Luke Skywalker's lightsaber long before Maz Kanata finally steals it from him. The publication reports that this is evident from the leaks that surfaced the internet before the release of "Star Wars: The Force Awakens."

The theory states that Kylo Ren may have acquired Luke Skywalker's lightsaber from a prosperous man through trade. This is the reason why he suddenly yells at Finn in "Star Wars: The Force Awakens," telling him that the lightsaber is his when he sees him holding the same blue lightsaber.

Long back, Making Star Wars reported that the blue lightsaber was retrieved by Maz Kanata during the battle between the Knights of Ren and the mysterious "Seven." Kylo Ren loses the lightsaber during the battle, which is then retrieved by Maz Kanata from the battlefield.

However, it is not clear how Maz Kanata was present at the scene of the battle, what is her origin and what connection she has with Luke Skywalker. Fans will finally get to know what Maz Kanata has to do with the Jedi Council in "Star Wars: Episode 8."
