5 Things to Know Before You Choose Immigration Lawyer

There is a lot of paperwork during the immigration process, and people always need an immigration lawyer to manage the lengthy procedures to help them through the issue.

If your immigration situation is also complicated or you simply don't have the time or confidence to prepare the forms on your own, then you must consult an immigration lawyer.

But before hiring an immigration lawyer, you need to do your homework. A good lawyer can be very costly while a cheap lawyer may just add to your problems.

Here are five things to look for before choosing an immigration lawyer.

1. Get a referral

Try to find out a lawyer through your network. Ask your friends or colleagues if they know someone that may help you in connecting with a good immigration lawyer. People in your network circle can be of great help when you are hunting for immigration lawyer. They can share their own contacts to get you one.

2. Negotiate

Immigration lawyers, like any other lawyers, charge for their time. Many lawyers have fixed set of fees for standard procedures, such as preparing and filing your case, and responding to requests for evidence. But they should be able to estimate the number of days it is going to take so that you can negotiate according to the time the lawyer is investing in your case.

3. Hire a lawyer who understands your language

Language can be the barrier for many people. Find a lawyer that reads and speaks your language fluently because an immigration process involves a lot of transcription and research work. The process gets easier for both lawyer and the applicant if they both speak or understand common language.

4. Check credentials

After you are done with lawyer hunting, check his credentials before saying a final yes to kick off the process. To check the credentials of the lawyer, you will need to contact your local state bar to find out if your lawyer is licensed and legally clean. You can search the particular lawyer on American Immigration Lawyers Association (AILA) website to see if they are members. While membership in AILA is not a requirement to practice immigration law, it can be a good indication of a lawyer credentials.

5. Search AILA

You can also search for a good and experienced immigration lawyers through the American Immigration Lawyers Association (AILA) website. AILA is a national association of lawyers and attorneys who teach and practice immigration law. Here you can zero in a lawyer with decent experience in immigration law and the case as a whole.
