The death toll of the 6.2 magnitude earthquake in Central Italy on Wednesday reached 250 as rescue teams continue to search for survivors.

In an interview with The Independent, Mayor Sergio Pirozzi said the strong tremor killed one of every 10 residents of Amatrice town.

As rescue teams dig through the debris and rubbles, a firefighter saw the legs of a little girl struggling to survive. The child, believed to be 8 years old, was eventually rescued alive.

The Italian Civil Protection Agency said Amatrice town recorded 53 fatalities while 100 others were injured. The remaining victims were from the towns of Arquata del Tronto and Accumoli.

The incident also displaced more than 1,000 residents.

The Huffington Post reported that the conditions in the affected areas are getting worse as the survivors, who slept in tents or cars, continue to feel the tremble of the moderate 5.2 to 5.4 aftershocks.
