Shazam app for iPhone and iPod Touch gets an update and brings the "Auto Shazam" feature that recognizes music and other audio playing around you and presents a list of all tracks you have come across as you go about your day.

Shazam brings a seamless and effortless feature for its iPhone and iPod Touch app that recognizes any music and audio playing around you and presents a list of all the tracks whenever you check in. The new feature, "Auto Shazam" operates independently without users having to manually go into the app to find their favorite moments. The always on feature does not affect users' normal phone browsing as it runs in the background and also avoids draining the phone's battery by setting itself off if users do not interact with the app for two hours.

Shazam rolled out the latest feature in an update to iPhone and iPod app, last week. Apple iPad users have been using the  "Auto Shazam" feature for a while now.

"The one thing we have with us all day, every day, is our phone. With today's Shazam update for iPhone, our users can now capture all the media playing around them in the car, at a café, in a cinema, or while watching TV, even when their phone is locked or they're using it to do something else," Daniel Danker, Shazam's chief product officer, said in a press release. "This update is another leap forward in achieving our vision to help people effortlessly recognize and engage with the world around them."

A user will see a red status bar in the notification area that means Shazam is on auto mode. The app will continue to be in the same mode, even if the device screen is locked and will continue to prepare a track list for users. The app also notifies if it identifies any new song, show or an Ad, as well as saves the content to user's collections. To make it easier, Shazam arranges the track list date-wise, so users can easily browse through the content. If a user finds any favorite moment, they can "star" it to save to the favorite list.

The app developers also explained that the new feature was not capable of recording, saving and sending any data, adding that "only digital fingerprint summaries of the audio are sent to Shazam's servers to identify media content in Shazam's databases." These digital fingerprints cannot be reconstructed to retrieve the original audio in any way.

Users can download the updated version of the app from iTunes for free.
