According to a recent study published by BMC Public Health, cigarette smoke contains as many as 4,800 chemicals. The report highlights that most of these chemicals present in your cigarette are cancer-causing carcinogens. However, most smokers do not have any idea what they are inhaling through these cigarettes.

The study proposes that the consumers should be informed about the important facts related to chemical content of their cigarette smoke. This will not only make them more aware about what they are inhaling but also help them understand the real dangers of smoking. Even though it is easily assumed that the smokers are already aware of the health risks that come with smoking, many young adults and smokers would still be curious to know about this information. However, unfortunately for them, this information is not readily available.

According to Marcella Boynton, study lead author in University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, if the tobacco chemical information is made available to the tobacco industry as well as the people, it will not only help the existing smokers in kicking the habit but also prevent others from starting it.

"Given the FDA's role of communicating the harms of tobacco use, the researchers sought to understand how tobacco product users and non-users perceive the credibility of the FDA. Participants were asked if they had ever heard of the FDA and if they believed that the FDA could effectively regulate tobacco products. The vast majority of US adults surveyed (94.6%) reported having heard of the FDA, but awareness was lower amongst young adults, those with lower education, low numeracy and those living in poverty. The majority of both smokers (66.6%) and non-smokers (65.0%) believed that the FDA could effectively regulate tobacco products," added Boynton.
