Facebook has launched a “Donate Now” button which allows users to easily give money to non-profit organizations. The new feature has extended the simple “likes” to actually helping people.

It is a common scene during times of crisis that most of us rely on Facebook for updates and communication. The social networking giant believes that we can do better by providing financial support online.

Facebook announced on a blog post that is partnering with various organizations to collect monetary contributions through the accessible “Donate” button.

The latest addition to the site’s buttons will be placed next to the Posts in our News Feed published by partaking non-profit organizations at the upper most part of their official Pages.

Participating parties include Oxfam America, Donors Choose, LIVESTRONG Foundation, Leukemia & Lymphoma Society, Water.org, The Nature Conservancy, Malaria No More, Girls Inc., World Wildlife Fund, Boys & Girls Clubs of America, ASPCA, RAINN, St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, American Cancer Society, Blue Star Families, UNICEF, Kiva, United Nations World Food Programme, and The Red Cross.

Facebook users can choose the amount they intend to donate by clicking the “Donate Now” button. They will be asked to enter their payment details. Users can also choose to share the organization post with their friends to encourage others to donate as well.

It all started in the wake of Typhoon Haiyan where majority of the means of communication in the devastated cities and provinces were shut off. Therefore, there are limited means of contacting people from those areas. With Facebook, we were able to witness and learn the extent of the damage, thus, giving us knowledge on what we can give that would really be helpful and suitable.

In partnership with the International Federation of Red Cross, the social networking site thought of paving way to let users donate directly to Red Cross’ relief efforts in the ravaged regions in the Philippines.

This one, indeed, is for a greater cause.
