A letter written by a British couple to the burglars who broke into their home, apologizing for "not having much to take" and "not having particularly expensive taste," has gone viral online, according to the New York Daily News.

In the letter, homeowners Kate Barrett, 36, and Dan Owens, 34, also thanked the burglars for leaving fingerprints behind during their raid. In addition, Owens criticized the thieves for not taking a look at Barrett's "awful" video collection.

"We don't have much need for old Sweet Valley High VHS tapes or Take That and 911 cassettes," Owens said.

They wrote:

Dear Burglars,

Thanks for popping by the other night and we're sorry we didn't have more for you to take.

As you now know, we don't have particularly expensive tastes so there's no need to come in again, unless you would like to take my collection of VHS videos and cassettes - Dan is very disappointed you didn't take these first time round.

If you would like them just knock on the front door and ask - no need to break another patio door as it's dreadfully hard work cleaning up all the glass.

Thanks for all the finger prints - we really appreciated those.

Lots of love

The humorous note came after the couple realized their Northampton home had been ransacked with cash, cameras, an iPod, and a gold watch missing.

While most people would have probably focused on a police investigation into the incident, Barrett said she wanted to remain positive.

"So many people just sit around and mope after being burgled - I thought it would be a good idea to leave them a note in case they come back or see it online," Barrett said.

"People seem to think it is brilliant and have said it's admirable how we've coped with the burglary while keeping a smile on our faces."

After uploading a picture of the letter on their Facebook and Twitter accounts, it was shared and retweeted hundreds of times -- causing a social media storm of laughter.

The couple also said police are still investigating the incident.
