Miley Cyrus has once again shocked the world. The 20-year-old singer is facing criticism and backlash after she smoked a suspicious-looking cigarette on stage at the 2013 MTV European Music Awards, Hollywood Life reports.

After Cyrus twerked in a silver spandex spacesuit to "We Can't Stop" and belted the tunes to her ballad "Wrecking Ball" she took the stage to accept her first EMA award for Best Video for "Wrecking Ball."

She started by thanking her fans, known as Smilers, and Terry Richardson for directing the video. Then Cyrus began fumbling in her purse and finally pulled out what some people believe to be a joint.

"I couldn't fit this award in my bag, but I did find this," she said before lighting up and smoking on stage.

The crowd roared with laughter but many of her fans took to Twitter with mixed reactions about the singer's latest antics.

"Just when I though she couldn't get any more provocative Miley Cyrus smokes a joint on stage, gotta love her #EMA #MTVEMA," @MissesBabette wrote.

"Miley Cyrus won an EMA and lit a joint on stage. Oh," @OhMyNickJay tweeted.

"Was that a joint Miley smoked on stage, while she was receiving the award?" @xProudToBeACule posted.

According to USA Today, marijuana is illegal in the Netherlands but smokers can't be prosecuted for having a small amount. The drug is also sold in cafes known as "coffee shops." Cyrus reportedly arrived in Amsterdam the Friday night before the Nov. 10 show and was spotted with several other celebrities at one of those "coffee shops."

She also wore marijuana leaf emblems in her earphones during her "Wrecking Ball" performance. During a recent Rolling Stone Interview the former Disney star admitted to trying cocaine but declared weed "as the best drug on Earth."

"Hollywood is a coke town, but weed is so much better. And Molly, too. Those are happy drugs- social drugs. They make you want to be with friends. You're out in the open. You're not in a bathroom," she said. "[Coke is] is so gross and so dark. It's like, what are you, from the 90s? Ew."
