A hoverboard burst into flames at a New Jersey home over the weekend, torching a portion of the family's carpet and prompting fire officials to warn customers of the dangers of leaving the gadgets unattended.

The incident occurred Sunday while the family was out of the house. Fire officials were called to the scene following reports of an explosion at an Ocean County home only to later determine that the cause of the explosion and subsequent fire was a charging hoverboard that was left unattended, according to Philadelphia's ABC affiliate WPVI-TV.

This is the latest instance of these gadgets catching on fire and causing damage to property.

Earlier this month, a hoverboard torched a living room in Westchester, N.Y., after it was left unattended while charging. A similar incident happened several days before Thanksgiving when a family in Louisiana lost their home due to an exploding hoverboard - once again, while it was charging.

Reports of hoverboards exploding while being plugged in to charge have become so numerous that Amazon has pulled various brands from its website pending a safety review, according to the Verge.

In the meantime, Lanoka Harbor, N.J., fire officials took to Facebook to warn customers not to leave the boards unattended while charging. They also urged them to register the devices for warranties and check for manufacturer recalls.

The fire is under investigation by the Ocean County Fire Marshall's Office.
