The "sleuth" will remain with the Montreal Canadiens for the foreseeable future. On Wednesday, the Habs announced a contract extension for GM Marc Bergevin that locks him up through the 2021-22 season.

"I am very pleased to announce that Marc accepted a multi-year contract extension and that he will remain our general manager until the end of the 2021-22 season. This new agreement brings added stability for our organization and particularly for our hockey operations. It enables us to continue our efforts in giving our fans a winning team", Canadiens owner, president and CEO Geoff Molson said in a statement on the team website. "Marc is an excellent general manager who quickly made an impact in the league with his leadership skills and his ability to identify the needs and find the personnel to assemble a championship team. I am very pleased with his work and the results he has achieved since his appointment as general manager."

Bergevin, 50, has been with Canadiens as top personnel decision-maker since May 2012. In that time, the Habs have reached the postseason every season, winning their division twice. They've finished the past two seasons with 100-points or more, the first time the franchise has done that since 1987-88 and 1988-89.

Bergevin will get plenty of changes this season to prove he's worthy of his, no doubt extremely lucrative, new contract. The Habs are playing extremely well, but they're currently facing an injury to Brendan Gallagher and were already said to be pursuing trades both at both the forward and defensive positions.

With Gallagher out for the next six to 10 weeks and the team already considering additions, Bergevin's likely to spend the majority of his time over the next couple of months ferreting out deals that will aid the Habs as they chase the Cup they haven't held aloft since 1992-93.
