A cattle rancher in Idaho was shot dead by police on Sunday, after they responded to an emergency that involved an injured bull, USA Today reported.

The incident happened on Sunday night, when a Subaru station wagon collided with the bull, and two occupants of the car got trapped. Emergency responders rushed to the scene to help remove the trapped victims, but the injured bull became aggressive to everyone and everything around it.

"The bull was very agitated and was aggressive to emergency services, as well as the other cars coming up and down the highway," said Sheriff Ryan Zollman of Adams County.

Just as the authorities were about to put down the marauding bull, its owner, Jack Yantis, arrived carrying a rifle, according ABC News. What transpired next though remains unclear, as police claimed there was an altercation and that both Yantis and two deputies present all fired their weapons.

When the guns went silent, Yantis lay dead, one deputy sustained a minor injury, while the bull also got neutralized. Emergency workers were able to get the trapped occupants of the Subaru out, and rushed them to hospital by an air ambulance.

Investigations into the incident are ongoing, and the two deputies involved in the shooting were both placed on paid leave immediately, according to WPTV. Their names were not immediately released.

"Our thoughts are with our community and especially all those involved in this incident," said Zollman. "The Adams County Sheriff's Office takes matters involving any use of force very seriously and we have requested detectives with the Idaho State Police to conduct the investigation into this incident."

This incident will be a huge blow to the community, as Yantis was a popular rancher in the area.
