Israel said its country's defense forces attacked two Syrian army artillery positions on Sunday night in response to an errant projectile that hit the Golan Heights earlier on Sunday. Israel Defense Forces (IDF) conducted two artillery strikes on regime military positions on the outskirts of Quneitra in the central Syrian Golan Heights, Israeli military said.

"The IDF holds the Syrian army responsible for any fire emanating within its territory, and that the IDF will not allow any attempts to harm Israel's sovereignty or citizens," an IDF spokesperson said, according to Ynetnews.

Earlier on Sunday, IDF reported that a rocket from Syria landed in an open field in the northern Golan Heights, reported Xinhua.

"This is the second time in the past two days errant fire from the Syrian Armed Forces landed in Israeli territory," the statement said.

Israeli Defense Minister Moshe Ya'alon termed the Syrian rocket attack a violation of Israel's sovereignty and warned that Israel would not ignore such incidents in future.

"From our perspective this is a violation of sovereignty and a crossing of a red line. The State of Israel has no intention of ignoring such incidents, and the IDF therefore attacked two Syrian army artillery positions this evening," Ya'alon said, according to Jerusalem Post.

"We view the Syrian regime and its army as being responsible for what happens in their territory and we will not be tolerant in cases such as these," he further added.

Israel annexed the Golan Heights in 1981, but the annexation was not recognized by international community.
