If you look at the Dallas Mavericks roster now, you will see that they are pretty deep at the point guard position, but that wasn't the case earlier in the offseason. The Mavericks currently have Deron Williams, Devin Harris, J.J. Barea and Raymond Felton as point guards on their roster, but it is being reported that they were trying to convince Steve Nash to come back and play for them this upcoming season, an offer which he turned down, according to Marc Stein of ESPN.

The Mavericks are reportedly not the only team that have tried to woo Nash to their team recently, though, as the Cleveland Cavaliers tried to get the two-time MVP to pursue a buyout during last season so he could join their team for the playoff run. The last contact the Mavericks had with Nash was reportedly in June as they wanted him to un-retire, rejoin Dirk Nowitzki and play some minutes at backup point guard for them.

Nash suffered a broken leg in his first season with the Los Angeles Lakers, and since then he has had a nerve condition that hasn't allowed him to play consistently. Despite the condition, Nash has reportedly insisted that if he was well enough to play, he would have suited up for the Lakers and nobody else. The Lakers acquired Nash in a trade from the Phoenix Suns in 2012, but he was only able to play in 65 games in his two seasons with the team.

Nash has been focused lately on mentoring younger players like C.J. McCollum, Jordan Clarkson and others and will reportedly be joining the Golden State Warriors organization as a part-time player development consultant. Nash is also currently executive producing a film and serving as the general manager for the Canadian national team, so he has a full plate.

Nash played for Dallas from 1998 until 2004, where he was teammates with Nowitzki. In his six seasons with the Mavericks, Nash averaged 14.6 points and 7.2 assists per game. A return to Dallas for one final season would have been a great story for the NBA, but Nash is not physically capable of playing anymore. Instead, he will now focus on making the great shooters of the Warriors even greater somehow.
