Amazon has updated its Instant Video app for iOS, allowing users to stream content from iPad and iPhones directly to Apple TV with the latest AirPlay feature.

Amazon has rolled out the latest update to its Amazon Instant Video app, which includes a bundle of new features. It supports AirPlay, allowing users to stream movies and videos from Amazon Instant Video app on iPads and iPhones to Apple TV. Users have long waited for AirPlay support on Amazon's on-demand video app and their wish has finally come true.

In addition to AirPlay support, Amazon Instant Video is now integrated with Amazon-owned IMDb. This will give users an opportunity to look up the cast and director information, ratings, goofs, trivia and quotes. They can also read the customer reviews, find other videos featuring the cast members or the director, simultaneous downloads and video recommendations based on other customer's reviews. The overall performance of the app has been improved by fixing some bugs, according to the app description.

The online video on-demand service was first launched on iOS last summer as an alternative to  Netflix. The online retailer expanded its support to other Apple products including iPhones and iPod Touch devices. Amazon's TV library has over 40,000 streaming videos and around 140,000 movies and TV series available for rent or purchase.

Amazon Instant Video is already compatible with several devices including PlayStation 3, the Xbox 360 through Xbox Live, the Wii and Wii U. Further, it can be used on smart TVs and Blu-ray players such as the latest Samsung and LG models. It is also compatible with streaming players like the Roku boxes.

The app, however, is not compatible with Android devices with the exception of Amazon Kindle Fire. It would be good to see the app enter the Android platform, which has the largest user base.

The Instant Video app is available for download from iTunes for free.
