The new "Fantastic Four" film did not have a fantastic opening weekend at the box office. The poorly-reviewed superhero movie opened in second place behind Tom Cruise's "Mission Impossible: Rogue Nation" and made just $26.2 million over the weekend, according to USA Today. The 20th Century Fox film had a huge production and marketing budget of $200 million and made half the expected sales of $40 million.

Fox was trying to reintroduce the series about four superheroes after two previous versions of the comic-book underwhelmed in 2005 and 2007, according to the New York Times. It's the worst opening for a movie that featured Marvel Comics' characters since "Ghost Rider: The Spirit of Vengeance" debuted to $22.1 million in 2012, according to Variety.

The studio cast a bunch of up-and-coming actors that included Michael B. Jordan, Miles Teller, Kate Mara and Jamie Bell to bring "Fantastic Four" into a new era. Director Josh Tank suggested in a Tweet that he was not responsible for the final cut of the film.

"A year ago I had a fantastic version of this. And it would've received great reviews," he tweeted. "You'll probably never see it. That's reality though."

The tweet was quickly deleted from his account.
