An earthquake with a preliminary magnitude of 6.9 hit the western part of the Ogasawara island chain in the Pacific Ocean about 1,000 kilometers (600 miles) south of Tokyo was reported by the authorities.

According to Japan's Meteorological Agency, the earthquake was extremely deep, about 480 kilometers (300 miles) below the ocean's surface, which would result in less damage, AP reported.

A magnitude 6.3 was reported by the U.S. Geological Survey, but discrepancies from other sources are expected due to slightly different equipment, locations and methods used in estimates.

The earthquake did not trigger a tsunami in the same area as the very deep earthquake that occurred on the same chain on May 31, reported Japan Times.

Some islands near the Ogasawara chain felt the earthquake but it wasn't felt in Tokyo.

Earthquakes and volcanoes are common in Japan since it sits along the Pacific "Ring of Fire," which is the arc of seismic faults around the Pacific Ocean.
