The man who was shot by guards after he attempted to gain unauthorized access to an Air Force Base in Little Rock, Ark., has been identified.

Public Affairs Specialist Deba Green released the name of the man, Larry McElroy, on Tuesday, according to TVH11, and said that he is in critical condition after Monday's incident.

Officials at the base said that McElroy drove up to the main gate in a maroon SUV, ran over a stop sign and then a curb in an attempt to make his way through. Before he could get in, he was seen with a rifle and security guards opened fire, Fox News reported.

"He engaged a street sign but did not actually come through the front gate or contact any of our barriers," said base Commander Col. Chip Brown. "At any given time we have four to six defenders at the gate. To my knowledge, two were directly involved in this engagement."

The suspect's vehicle was searched for explosives after the incident while the Little Rock Fire Department Bomb Squad inspected his home in Jacksonville, which is about 15 miles northeast from the base. The FBI didn't find any explosives in both areas, AP reported.

Apart from McElroy, a bystander was also taken to the hospital for unknown injuries that is not related to the shooting and was immediately released.

Green said that there was no apparent motive or ties to terrorism, while Brown said that 43-year-old McElroy is not a member of the military.

After the incident, the base closed its gates to inbound and outbound traffic and was locked down for about three hours.
