Facebook has released a new feature named Moments that makes it possible for friends to privately share photos using their smartphones through facial-recognition technology.

Moments groups the photos on your phone based on when they were taken, and using facial- recognition technology, determines who of your friends are pictured so it can privately sync those photos quickly and easily, product manager Will Ruben explained in a Facebook Newsroom blog post.

"When you go to a wedding, for example, there are many people taking great photos throughout the day. You all want a quick way to share your photos with the friends who are in them, and get photos that you're in back. The same is true for smaller events too, like a kayak trip or a night out," Ruben said, according to News Corp Australia.

The app uses the same facial-recognition technology that Facebook uses for tagging suggestions in photos. It is already available in the U.S. on Android and iOS and is set to be released in more countries over time.

This is one of the many steps Facebook is taking toward advancements in artificial intelligence.

"With artificial intelligence, we have a chance to build a new generation of apps and services that are more natural, intuitive and valuable," Zuckerberg said, according to CNBC.
