Matilda the alien-eyed cat is taking the Internet by the storm!

Matilda quickly rose to Instagram fame for her huge eyes that resemble an alien.

When the feline landed on Earth in 2013, she was soon adopted by her forever family through an animal rescue organization, People reported

Although it's fun to speculate if Matilda is really an alien sent here from another galaxy to spy on us humans, her veterinarians say the story behind her big eyes is much more serious than that. Matilda has a genetic eye problem that is expected to worsen as she ages - though she is in no pain right now.
"After she saw a specialist we learned that it is a spontaneous lens luxation, which means that the lens detached from the rest of the eye for no known reason. This is the mysterious part of the problem since she is an otherwise healthy cat," Matilda's human, who wishes to remain anonymous, told People.

"In her litter of six kittens, three others were affected. Two of them had the lenses removed but recovering from the surgery was very difficult. The specialist believes that their disorder could also involve a collagen deficiency, which makes healing from injury or surgery very hard for them."
To prepare for the day in the future when Matilda will need surgery, her humans set up this GoFundMe page to raise money.
