The man who attacked Paul Pelosi, husband of former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, inside his San Francisco home with a hammer in 2022, was sentenced Friday to 30 years in prison.

The U.S. Attorney's Office for the Northern District of California announced David DePape's sentence on Friday, after he was convicted by a federal jury of assault and attempted kidnapping charges in November 2023.

Prosecutors sought the maximum 40-year sentence. According to the Associated Press, DePape's attorneys asked U.S. District Judge Jacqueline Scott Corley to sentence him to just 14 years, saying he had no criminal history and was going through a difficult time.

Corley imposed a 20-year sentence for one count and a 30-year sentence for the other, to run concurrently. DePape was given credit for 18 months served in custody since the attack.

"The Pelosi family couldn't be prouder of their Pop and his tremendous courage in saving his own life on the night of the attack and in testifying in this case," read a statement from the Pelosi family, shared by spokesperson Aaron Bennet. "Speaker Pelosi and her family are immensely grateful to all who have sent love and prayers over the last eighteen months, as Mr. Pelosi continues his recovery."

DePape still faces an upcoming trial on state charges in connection with the attack, including attempted murder, assault with a deadly weapon, elder abuse, residential burglary, false imprisonment and threatening the life of or serious bodily harm to a public official.
