Slovakia's interior minister revealed the assassination attempt of Slovakia's Prime Minister Robert Fico was politically motivated based on "initial interviews with the suspect."

During a news conference outside of the hospital where the prime minister is being treated, Interior Minister Matúš Šutaj Eštok told reporters:

"This assassination attempt was politically motivated, and the suspect made the decision to do it shortly after the presidential election."

Defense Minister Robert Kaliňák, who spoke alongside Eštok, added, "It is clear this was politically motivated.

Fico has "suffered multiple injuries." However, no details were provided when reporters inquired as to whether the prime minister was shot in the stomach, reported CNN News

Prime Minister Robert Fico was shot multiple times and rushed to a hospital in "life-threatening condition" in an attack after a political event on Wednesday.

Fico, 59, was shot in the stomach after four rounds were fired outside the House of Culture in the town of Handlova.

Fico has publicly opposed military aid to Ukraine and is critical of the European Union and NATO.

Thousands of people took to the streets of Bratislava in March to display their solidarity with Ukraine and express their disapproval of Slovakia's close relationship with Russia.
